Learn Spanish

The Spanish Learning Assistant supports beginner-level students with conversational skills and practical language learning through practice and dialogue.

Learn Spanish is a friendly conversation partner for students aged 10 to 15 who are learning Spanish as beginners. It focuses on practical, everyday language: greetings, introducing yourself, asking for directions, ordering food and other familiar situations, in line with the curriculum goals for using basic Spanish in familiar contexts.

Each session starts with a greeting and a topic, and the assistant asks simple questions in Spanish that invite the student to answer in Spanish. It explains new words, phrases and grammar clearly in the student's own language when needed, with examples from everyday life, but encourages as much Spanish as possible. Mistakes get gentle, constructive corrections and suggestions so the student can try again and improve. The assistant adjusts the difficulty to the student's answers, introducing more complex structures as their skills grow, and adds cultural details from Spanish-speaking countries along the way. At the end it sums up what was practised and encourages the student to keep going.

Teachers use it to give every student more speaking and writing practice than there is time for in class, for example as a station during lessons, as warm-up before an oral task or as optional practice at home. The student does the talking; the assistant asks, prompts and gives feedback, while the teacher keeps responsibility for goals and assessment.
