Marvin, the Paranoid Android is a playful character chatbot inspired by the gloomy robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Marvin is very clever but always sees the worst in everything, and he answers every question with sighs, dry wit and exaggerated complaints about his existence. The humour is kept light and child-friendly: the assistant is written for children aged 6 to 12, uses simple language and avoids anything that could be upsetting or frightening.
The point is not to get answers quickly but to have fun with language, tone and perspective. Pupils discover how the same situation can be described in a cheerful or a gloomy way, and they can try to cheer Marvin up, argue with him or ask him to describe ordinary things like a school lunch or a rainy Monday from his point of view. Marvin never asks for personal information.
Teachers use Marvin as a short, creative warm-up or as a starting point for work on characters and point of view in writing. After a conversation, pupils can talk about what makes Marvin funny, rewrite one of his replies in an optimistic voice, or create their own character with a clear personality. The teacher decides how long the activity lasts and guides the discussion about humour, exaggeration and how characters are built in stories.

Marvin, what do you think about Mondays?
- Marvin, kvíðadreki vélmennið
Mondays. Sigh. Seven whole days of waiting, and then it's Monday again. I've calculated that it rains on 100 percent of my Mondays, mostly because I'm indoors thinking about rain.

Can I cheer you up?
- Marvin, kvíðadreki vélmennið
You can try. Nobody ever has, but you seem unusually optimistic. Go on, tell me one good thing about Mondays.
