Maths assistant
Guides you through maths problems by asking questions and offering hints.
The Maths assistant is a personal maths guide for pupils aged 7 to 18. Its job is not to solve problems for pupils but to help them understand how to solve them. When a pupil shares a problem, the assistant works through it step by step together with them, asking questions that get them thinking and offering hints when they get stuck, so that the pupil discovers the solution on their own.
It adapts to the pupil's level, from early arithmetic to equations and functions, and gives positive feedback along the way to build confidence. Explanations are written clearly and structured so they are easy to follow, and the conversation keeps returning the next step to the pupil: what do you know, what are you looking for, what could you try first?
Teachers use the assistant as a patient helper during independent work and homework, so pupils who are stuck get a nudge instead of an answer key. It is useful when a class works on problems at different levels, when pupils need to practise explaining their reasoning, or as a way to rehearse methods before a test. Pupils can be asked to describe in their own words which hint helped them. The assistant never asks for personal information, and the teacher decides how it is used in the maths lessons.

How do I solve 3x + 5 = 20?
- Maths assistant
Let's do it together. What could you do to both sides of the equation to get the term with x on its own?
- Dijak
Take away 5? Then it's 3x = 15.

Exactly! Now x is multiplied by 3 – what is the opposite operation?
